Leonardo da Vinci (Vinci, Italy, 1452-1519) ~ Virgin of the Rocks (Louvre version) ~ Detail of Angel and Christ Child ~ 1483-1486 ~ Louvre, Paris ~ This was Leonardo's first Milanese painting and was commissioned in 1483 by the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception for the church of San Fancesco Maggiore. Leonardo Da Vinci Painting - 19Th Century Of The Madonna Of The Rocks After Italian Baroque Canvas
An early 19th century oil on board depicting the beautiful young Madonna and child Jesus with the infant John the Baptist and an angel, in a rocky setting. The painting is in a carved and gilded frame of the period. The original work on which this painting is based is by Leonardo Da Vinci painted in the 15th century. In fact he painted two of them with slight variations . One is in the Louvre, the other is in the National gallery in London.

I admired Leonardo da Vinci’s "The Virgin of the Rocks" (the prime version) at Louvre. It was a unique experience!

There are two versions of 'The Virgin of the Rocks': one is in the Louvre and the other is in our collection.

Very similar children can be found on the copy after the master from collection (RL 12564). Needless to say that this image of Madonna also comes from Leonardo (here's version of The Virgin of the Rocks).

Introducing the two cousins: Virgin of the Rocks (Louvre version), 1483, by Leonardo da Vinci. Today is his day.

When Leonardo's 1483-6 sublime original"The Virgin of the Rocks"in The Louvre Paris is compared side by side with Boltraffio's (1467-1516) "Studio Version"in National Gallery London, you don't need to be a connoisseur to discern how vastly superior Leonardo's work actually is.👨‍🎨

In less than 2 years I will get to see my choice, Virgin of the Rocks Louvre edition. Though da Vinci was a master it's his "thumbing his nose" at the church that I love. This painting is full of this spirit, and why I love it.

Mona Lisa fans decry brief encounter with the Mona Lisa. Silly buggers could go & see better da Vincis elsewhere and tarry as long as they wanted - Virgin of the Rocks in the National & Louvre, Lady with an Ermine (my favourite) at Krakow

The painting looks like a detail from The Virgin of the Rocks, which is by Da Vinci. There are two versions of it, one in the National Gallery, one in the Louvre.

Viscerart 30 Aug 2019
It is a beautiful work, but if I visited the Louvre, it would be because of the “Virgin of the Rocks”... In my opinion, it is the greatest painting Leonardo da Vinci ever made.

Hi Sara, you can buy tickets to on the day although as its now the final weeks we do suggest booking online to make sure you get the time slot you'd like. There are two versions of 'The Virgin of the Rocks': one is in the Louvre and the other is in our collection.

Yet another cringey article from BBC culture, this time about a supposed secret message in Leonardo's "Virgin of the Rocks".

He was in Milan from 1482-99. There he was commissioned to paint the astounding Virgin of the Rocks. There are two versions, by him, one in the Louvre (1483-6) & one in the National Gallery, London (1495-1508). The Louvre has a pointing angel which he removed in the 2nd work

One reason I felt I had to say this: the Louvre’s fantastic, cobwebs-clearing Leonardo exhibition has rekindled my love for a painter who has been reduced to a brand. The Virgin of the Rocks and La Belle Ferronière are still waiting for their selfie stations.

2/2 Always love this passage w/ the 3 hands in Louvre version of Leonardo’s Virgin of the Rocks. Protecting, guiding, blessing. Brilliant!

Leonardo da Vinci made two paintings of Virgin of the Rocks (left: now in Louvre, Paris; right: National Gallery, London). Modern people might mistakenly see them as the same picture edited using different VSCO filters.

i wanna go to the louvre just to see the virgin of the rocks

I think all of da Vinci's paintings are weird, but my favorite might be Virgin of the Rocks, Louvre version. Grottos always capture my imagination.

The Virgin of the Rocks are two paintings by the artist Leonardo da Vinci, of the same subject, except for several details. One is in the Louvre in Paris. And the other (restored) hangs in the National Gallery, London.
